If you want to make money, it’s not enough to have images of celebrities wearing and using famous brands. You have to secure that knowledge with keywords, and use that information for yourself.
If you don’t, others might use the information that they find, and pay you pennies on the dollar to license that great celebrity-brand image to make money for themselves through native advertising and social media deals.
Here are three important steps you can take to make sure you get your fair share of the revenue:
1. Make sure that you know what you’ve got – That means finding all the important brand associations in your images so that you know how they could be used. This can be done by your own staff, or better still by a specialist outsourcing company. Every brand association you find that others don’t, turns that image into a “brand exclusive”.
2. Be the first to make a sale – If you know that your images contain brand associations, then you have a chance to offer them for sale before, or at the same time as, your competitors. Relatively few photo agencies have a proper system for brand sales, so it might not take much to be at the head of the game.
3. Set up deals with companies leveraging brand connections already – There are a number of companies working in the social media and web site space monetising features such as “get the look” and/or utilising native advertising channels. Work with businesses in the know, to set up distribution and sales systems before you find the brand images.
